Note from the Author: This book is dedicated to the glory and greatness of the Coventine Empire - a gift from the studious researchers of the Valanician Libraries to Her Imperial Glory, Empress of The One True Nation, Elleinad.
~Page 8 - Of Furkin~
Furkin are strange beings who walk and stand like a human, with full bodied legs, torsos, opposable thumbs, but are covered in the fur that resembles an animal. Their facial features usually also resemble the animals they seem to represent.
There have, as of the writing of this book, been noted a variety of furkin resembling large cats, such as lynxes, pumas, tigers, and lions. There have also been "wolf" furkin, and "fox" furkin. It could be noted that to the south, in the deserts of Devilin, there have also been spotted remote tribes of "hyena" furkin. Living in clans and smaller communities, furkin are difficult to be found in the wild, and many prefer to stay away from the civilized cities, as well they should.
The Empire highly prizes their pelts, and more than one hunt has been led by the nobility for their heads. Halfblood furkin tend to look like humans, but with the ears, and sometimes tail, of their furkin parent.
~Page 7 - Of Dragonkin~
The dragonkin of Rembrant are known to be descendants of the Lord of High Magic himself. While true dragons may transform fully into their ancestral forms, with great leathery wings, jewel-like scales, and lizardesque forms, the majority of dragonkin on Rembrant trend more towards humanoid properties, with scales, horns, and, on rare occasion, wings.
They are not considered halfbloods, for there no longer seem to exist any full dragonkin, having been lost to time, along with their Lord of High Magic.
Of special note is while the true dragonkin lay eggs while in full dragon form and watch their young until they are born (the young also born as dragons, and learning from their parents to transform into a more humanoid appearance), the dragonkin of today bear their young as any mammal would, in live birth.
~Page 6 - Of Halfbloods~
Almost as numerous as the many humans that live in Rembrant would be those who are, disgustingly, not of any pure blood.
While pure blooded non-humans may be used in slavery, it is this author's recommendation that halfblooded beings be used for the Arena, or slain on sight, as they cannot be trusted with the normal tasks a pure blooded slave may be. And they are certainly not worthy of citizenship in fair Rembrant.
Half-elves of any variety, half-orcs, fae (a combination of pixie and human blood), or any being who has a mix of human and non-human blood fall under this category.
~Page 5 - Of Merfolk~
Merfolk come in a variety of shapes and colors. A veritable rainbow of diversity, the merfolk of the Rembratian seas are known to come in every known human skin color, while their tails can be defined as anything other than monotone.
Most merfolk are of a usual variety - a human torso, with fish fins in place of legs, but those tails are not a permanent feature, as merfolk are able to, at will, transform their tails into legs that they might walk the land. So as not to be confused with humans, the occasional patch of scales may be seen on their thighs or face, indicating that they are of the sea, rather than the land.
Cousins to the merfolk of Moanna is the deeper seas Siren. These maidens are the bane of sailors everywhere. They are known to be stunningly gorgeous women, with voices charmed to lure a man away from his ship and into their arms. It is purely for mating, as every Siren is female, and can only bare female children. Most, when finished with their man, will simply drown him in the sea and leave him to the sharks.
And finally, there are those who are known as the sea witches and the sea wizards. While the loss of magic may have had a toll on their powers, they continue to be a dark influence under the waters and it is known that they despise both the merfolk of Moanna, as well as the Sirens, for their beauty. Their appearances may be considered "deformed", as most will either appear with squid-like appendages, or shark tails in lieu of the more "flowery" form of normal merfolk.
~Page 4 - Of Dwarves~
The dwarves of Rembrant are rarely seen. It is known that they exist, only by those who have found themselves lost in the deepest mountains of Valanice and the Outlands. Short men with thick beards, soft as silk rumor would have it, but with gruff attitudes.
They keep mostly to themselves in the mountains and very little is known about them. No one knows if female dwarves exist, or if they reproduce by some strange asexual manner. Until a colony is discovered and can be captured for further studies, this entry will have to remain unfinished.
~Page 3 - Of Elves~
Closest to humans in physical form, the elf is the most common among the pleasure slaves and bath-house attendants. Their skin colors are not as diverse as the superior human, however, there are some anatomical differences to be noted among the three branches of elvenhood.
The first are the olive-skinned, slant-eyed elven natives of Advant. Possessed of an unearthly grace, they are known for their calligraphy, their unique arts, and their love of hand-to-hand combat as opposed to weapons and magic. It is also believed they are a superstitious lot, who do not take kindly to ghost stories and have a deep reverence for their ancestors - even going so far as to erect family shrines to long-lost patriarchs and matriarchs.
The second kind of elves are not as common, though they may be seen from time to time living in the woods of the Outlands, the Shrinewood, and even Espanino and Valanice. Blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin, and the tell-tale tapered ear that gives their kind away.
And finally, the rarest of elven kind in Rembrant, the dark-skinned elves that possess pure white hair. They call themselves the Drow, and while we have not taken the time to fully study their culture, it is on recommendation that they go for a hefty price in the pleasure markets.
~Page 2 - Of Humans~
Glory and honor be to the most prestigious, most pure, and most powerful of all, the human. Across the nations, humans are blessed with a diversity of color in their skin, from the softest, fairest white of the northern Elgardra plains, to the deep ebony luster of the far southern Imbala Tribes.
Humans carry no tails, nor ears, nor wings or fins, and great are they, for they do not need them. While other races might slur humans as common, they are far in the wrong, surely jealous of the humans' superiority.
Our fine Empire is comprised only of humans - the non-humans permitted to exist within our society as nothing more than property and fodder for entertainment. And Rembrant has never been stronger.
